The ZR2 is built around suspension and traction equipment that comes standard rather than as a package. Multimatic DSSV dampers, a 2-inch factory lift and front and rear electronic locking differentials work together with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires to keep the truck planted over rough terrain. An off-road cut front bumper improves the approach angle, and large aluminum skid plates protect the fuel tank and transfer case underneath. That combination is the main reason shoppers cross-shop the ZR2 against modified trucks instead of other trim levels.
An available ZR2 Bison Edition, developed with AEV, adds AEV front and rear bumpers, AEV skid plates for the differentials, transfer case and fuel tank, and gloss black 18-inch AEV wheels.

Two engines are offered on the ZR2, and both run a 10-speed automatic transmission. The standard 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel makes 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque delivered low in the rev range, which helps on grades and in soft terrain. The available 6.2L V8 trades some torque for peak horsepower, with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet on tap.
